You can sell a book on Etsy in three situations: you wrote or made it (a self-published paperback, a hand-bound journal, an ebook or PDF you authored), it is vintage — at least 20 years old — or it qualifies as a craft supply. What you generally cannot do is buy current mass-market books and resell them. Etsy is not a used-book marketplace; reselling is not permitted in the Handmade category, and a 2019 paperback bought wholesale fits none of the allowed routes. If that is your plan, eBay, AbeBooks, or BookScouter are the right venues, not Etsy.
Why Etsy blocks plain book reselling
Every item on Etsy must fit one of three buckets: handmade, vintage, or craft supplies. Etsy's help documentation is direct about it — reselling is not allowed in the Handmade category, where reselling means listing an item as handmade when you were not involved in designing or making it. The permitted exceptions are items handpicked by a seller (vintage goods at least 20 years old, items from nature, curated collections) and items sourced by a seller to enable buyer creativity, which is what craft supplies are.
A stack of last year's bestsellers is none of these. Listing them risks removal under Etsy's Creativity Standards, and repeated violations can cost you the account. Say it plainly to yourself before you build inventory: Etsy is a place to sell books you made or books old enough to be antiques.
Route 1: sell a book you wrote
This is the cleanest path and the one most people arrive looking for.
As a digital file. List it as a Digital files item and attach the PDF or EPUB. Etsy permits up to five files per listing at 20MB each, with file names capped at 70 characters. Delivery is instant, there is no cost of goods, and digital listings cannot use variations — so if you want to offer PDF and EPUB, attach both files to the same listing rather than trying to build a dropdown.
As a physical book. You are allowed to sell copies of a book you wrote, including ones printed for you by a production partner, provided you declare that partner in your shop. This is where Etsy diverges sharply from Amazon: nobody prints or ships for you. You buy an author-copy run, you store it, you pack it, you mail it. Budget for that before you set a price.
Both are worth comparing honestly against Amazon KDP, which prints on demand and pays 60% or 50% of list price minus printing cost on paperbacks and 35% or 70% of list price on Kindle editions. Etsy keeps you closer to 90% of the sale price but hands you the fulfilment. Many self-published authors run both: KDP for the print edition, Etsy for signed copies, bundles, and the PDF workbook that goes with it.
Route 2: vintage books
Books at least 20 years old qualify under Etsy's vintage rules, and this is a real, functioning category — mid-century cookbooks, old field guides, decorative cloth-bound sets, damaged books sold for craft use.
Three things separate listings that sell from listings that sit:
- Grade the condition honestly and specifically. "Good vintage condition" tells a buyer nothing. "Foxing on the first 10 pages, spine intact, previous owner's name in ink on the flyleaf" tells them everything and prevents the return.
- Photograph the flaws. All ten listing image slots exist for a reason. Spine, cover corners, title page with publication date, any damage.
- State the publication year in the listing. It is how a buyer verifies the vintage claim, and it is what Etsy will look at if the listing is reported.
Books sold for their material rather than their text — dictionary pages for collage, book board for binding — can list as craft supplies, but Etsy's Creativity Standards require that craft supplies not simply be ready-to-use commercial products being resold.
Route 3: book-adjacent handmade goods
Often the better business. Hand-bound journals and sketchbooks, rebound antique books, book-safes, blank-page notebooks, personalised children's books printed to order, bookmarks, book sleeves, and reading accessories are all unambiguously listable and carry none of the reselling risk. The audience overlaps almost perfectly with people searching for books on Etsy.
What Etsy takes, and what shipping costs
On Etsy's published rates — $0.20 to list, 6.5% transaction fee, and 3% + $0.25 processing on a US bank account:

Two important caveats for physical books. First, the 6.5% transaction fee applies to the total order amount, including what you charge for shipping — so a $20 book with $6 shipping is assessed on $26. Second, if the sale is attributed to Offsite Ads, add 15% of the order total (12% above $10,000 in a consecutive 365-day period, capped at $100), and shops past that threshold cannot opt out.
On shipping: books are heavy and margins die there. US sellers should look at USPS Media Mail, a discounted rate class restricted to books and other qualifying media — slower than Ground Advantage, materially cheaper on weight. Weigh a packed book on a kitchen scale before you set a shipping price; guessing is how a profitable listing becomes an unprofitable one.
What does not work
- Buying remainders or thrift-store paperbacks to flip. Not handmade, not vintage unless genuinely 20+ years old, not a craft supply.
- Dropshipping books from a wholesaler. Same problem, plus you never handpicked the item.
- Reselling PLR ebooks. "Master resell rights" bundles fail the requirement that digital items be made or designed by you, and sit badly against Etsy's Intellectual Property Policy.
- Scanned or public-domain reprints of someone else's work. Public domain status varies by country and by edition; a modern typeset or translation usually carries its own copyright.
- Undisclosed AI-written books. Etsy requires disclosure of AI involvement in the listing description.
