You can sell loose gemstones on Etsy, but not under Handmade unless you cut them yourself — they list as craft supplies, the category that covers materials whose purpose is making something new by hand. That path is open to dealers who buy rough or cut stones wholesale. What you cannot do is describe them loosely. US Federal Trade Commission rules require that lab-created stones be identified as such immediately before the stone's name, and that treatments be disclosed in the listing description itself when selling online. Etsy adds its own layer: crystals are permitted, healing and medical claims are not.
Which Etsy category you are actually in
Etsy allows three kinds of listing: handmade, vintage (at least 20 years old), and craft supplies. Reselling is permitted only in vintage and craft supplies, never in Handmade.
- Loose stones, rough, cabochons, faceted parcels, gemstone beads — craft supplies. Reselling is fine here because the buyer's purpose is making jewellery. This is where most gemstone shops on Etsy belong.
- Stones you cut, faceted or polished yourself — Handmade, with your own work as the creative contribution.
- Finished gemstone jewellery — Handmade only if you made or designed it. Buying finished rings wholesale and relisting them is a policy violation.
Get this wrong and the listing comes down. Etsy's gemstone market page returns 1,000+ relevant results, dominated by exactly the compliant formats: Ethiopian opal rough, faceted parcels in 2mm/3mm/4mm calibrated sizes, and bead strands for jewellery making.
The disclosure rules that actually govern your listing text
This is the part that separates a durable gemstone shop from one that generates disputes. The FTC's Guides for the Jewelry, Precious Metals, and Pewter Industries (16 CFR Part 23) set the standard, and the FTC's plain-language guidance spells out what it means in practice.
Natural versus lab-created
Using an unqualified word like "ruby," "sapphire," "emerald," or "topaz" for anything that is not a mined stone of that type is deceptive. If the stone is lab-created, you must say so using "laboratory-grown," "laboratory-created," "[manufacturer]-created," or an equivalent phrase — placed immediately before the stone's name and equally conspicuously. "Ruby (lab)" buried at the end of a 300-word description does not satisfy this. "Lab-Created Ruby" at the front of the title does.
The reverse also applies: do not call something "laboratory-grown" or "synthetic" unless it genuinely has essentially the same optical, physical and chemical properties as the mined stone. A glass or cubic-zirconia simulant is neither.
Treatments
Disclose a treatment when any of the following is true:
- It is not permanent — you must state how the stone was treated and that the treatment is or may not be permanent.
- It creates special care requirements — for example stones that cannot be exposed to heat, ultrasonic cleaning, or solvents.
- It significantly affects the stone's value, even if it is permanent and needs no special care.
Heated ruby and sapphire, fracture-filled and oiled emerald, dyed and stabilised turquoise, and irradiated topaz all fall inside these categories.
The online-selling clause
The Guides permit some disclosures to be made at the point of sale — but explicitly carve out situations where the buyer purchases without personally viewing the product, such as online. For an Etsy listing, disclosure must appear in the description of the product itself, before purchase. There is no version of this where you tell the buyer after they pay.
Etsy's own rules on crystals
Crystals and metaphysical supplies are allowed. Claims about them are where shops get removed. Under Etsy's Medical Claims policy, listings may not state that a product prevents, heals, treats, diagnoses, mitigates or cures any disease or medical condition, or that it substitutes for a prescription drug, medication, vaccine or medical procedure. Etsy is explicit that adding a disclaimer does not make a prohibited claim acceptable. Separately, metaphysical services such as reiki and spell casting are prohibited outright, while the physical supplies — crystals, herbs, candles — may be sold provided the listing does not carry metaphysical claims.
Rewrite accordingly: "amethyst cluster, 340g, Brazil" sells; "amethyst for anxiety relief" is a policy problem.
Specification is your competitive advantage
Discussion in jewellery-trade and gem-collecting forums about buying stones on Etsy is consistently cautious — recurring complaints involve uncalibrated stones that will not match for a pair of earrings, cabochons with unusable profiles for bezel setting, and uncertainty about whether a description is accurate. That scepticism is your opening. Every specification you publish that competing listings omit is a reason to buy from you.
List, at minimum: carat weight, dimensions in millimetres to one decimal place, cut and shape, calibration tolerance if sold as calibrated, treatment status, country of origin if known, clarity and colour description in plain language, and for cabochons the dome height and girdle profile. If a stone has a laboratory report, name the issuing laboratory and the report number so a buyer can verify it independently. If you do not know something — origin is often genuinely unknown down the supply chain — say "origin not verified" rather than guessing.
What does not work
Copying supplier descriptions. Wholesale listings frequently use "natural" for treated material and drop grade terms like "AAA" that have no standardised definition. You inherit the liability when you republish them.
Selling uncalibrated stones as calibrated. A jeweller ordering six 6mm rounds needs them to actually be 6mm. Measure and state the tolerance.
Photographs under coloured lighting. Colour is the primary value driver in coloured stones and misrepresented colour is the most common cause of returns. Shoot in consistent, neutral light and say what lighting you used.
Healing property listings. These are removed under the Medical Claims policy, and the disclaimer you were planning to add does not help.
Common questions
Are you allowed to sell crystals on Etsy?
Yes. Crystals themselves are permitted as physical goods. The restriction is on what you claim: no medical or healing claims, and no metaphysical services such as reiki or spell casting. Descriptive, factual listings — species, weight, dimensions, locality — are fine.
What is the best way to sell gemstones?
It depends on what you have. Etsy suits calibrated commercial-grade material, beads, rough parcels and mid-value stones, where the audience is hobbyist and independent jewellery makers buying materials. It is a poor fit for high-value single stones: the buyer pool for a $5,000 sapphire is not browsing a craft marketplace, and those stones move through specialist dealers, auction, or trade shows where the buyer can examine the stone. If you sell on Etsy, lean into the maker audience — sell in matched pairs and calibrated sets, and price for repeat purchase.
How much does Etsy take from a $100 sale?
Per Etsy's Fees & Payments Policy, current as of mid-2026: a 6.5% transaction fee ($6.50), a US payment processing fee of 3% + $0.25 ($3.25), and the $0.20 listing fee — $9.95, leaving $90.05. Note the transaction fee applies to shipping too, which matters for insured parcels. Offsite Ads add 15% (12% once your shop passes $10,000 in any 365-day period), but the Offsite Ads fee is capped at $100 per order — so on a $1,000 stone the fee is $100 rather than $150.
Can you make $10,000 a month on Etsy?
It happens, and gemstones have a structural advantage over most Etsy categories: order values are high, so $10,000 is perhaps 25–40 orders rather than several hundred. The offsetting problem is inventory capital — you have to own the stones before you can sell them. Etsy reported 5.6 million active sellers and 86.6 million active buyers, down 2.9% year over year, in Q1 2026, so the traffic is not expanding on its own. Treat any specific income figure you see quoted as unverifiable.
